Voltage and pH
Electrical and electrochemical gradients are fundamental to human physiology. Nerve impulses, muscle contraction, membrane transport, mitochondrial energy production, and many other cellular processes depend on electrical charge and ion gradients.
Dr. Jerry Tennant extends these principles into his Healing Is Voltage model, using pH and millivolts to describe the electrical state of tissues and the body’s ability to repair.
- Tennant associates approximately −20 to −25 mV with normal cellular function.
- He proposes that tissue repair requires substantially more voltage.
- In his model, pH from 0 to 6.9 is acidic and described as an electron stealer, while pH from 7 to 14 is alkaline and described as an electron donor.

Checking Polarity and Meridian Voltage
I use Muscle Testing to explore the polarity of body circuits, called meridians. Dr. Tennant describes each organ system and meridian circuit as having a scalar field that should spin clockwise. He describes touching, pointing to, or thinking about named midline locations while holding a pendulum as a way to observe the rotation of a circuit.
Within Tennant’s model, a healthy circuit has negative polarity and a clockwise rotation. If a meridian has positive polarity, I look for the root cause, correct the polarity, and then work to charge the body’s “batteries” using Dr. Jerry Tennant’s BioModulator and BioTransducer technology.
Polarity
Polarity is the possession or manifestation of two opposing attributes, tendencies, or principles.
A rechargeable-battery analogy is one way to understand the concept. A battery has positive and negative poles. Within Tennant’s model, the body’s electrical circuits also have polarity, and he proposes that severely depleted circuits may reverse polarity and become difficult to recharge.

Meridians and Body Voltage
In Tennant’s model, meridians are body circuits that run on voltage and pH. If a body battery is drained far enough, a circuit may flip polarity and become harder to charge again.
Mitochondria themselves depend on an electrochemical gradient. The electron transport chain helps establish a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. ATP synthase then uses that gradient to produce ATP, the cell’s primary energy currency. This is an established physiological example of how fundamental electrical and electrochemical gradients are to life.
Tennant describes muscles as battery packs for organs and attributes piezoelectric properties to muscles and bones. In his model, acupuncture meridians run through organs and muscles along fascial planes; solid organs act as capacitors, hollow organs as coils, and each meridian circuit becomes a Tesla circuit when connected to a muscle battery pack. He also connects front hollow organs with a digital root of three, posterior solid organs with a digital root of six, and a Fibonacci/scalar interpretation.

Scalar Energy
Everyday examples used to illustrate scalar energy include walking in nature, feeling sunshine on the skin, sitting in a cathedral, soaking feet in a rushing stream, petting a dog, praying, holding a child, or standing in a rainstorm. These are described as sources of scalar energy in Tennant’s model.
The model compares electromagnetic energy in the meridians with a checking account: deposits add energy and expenses remove it. Scalar energy is compared with a savings account. A healthy balance of activities builds reserves. If the polarities on body circuits are reversed, the model proposes that more scalar energy is needed to return those circuits to normal polarity.

What Can Lower Body Voltage?
The model groups the main reasons for ill health into five categories. Think of these like resistors in the flow of electrons: they lower the overall voltage of body circuits.
- Emotions
- Root canals and other dental infections
- Scars and tattoos
- Toxins
- Lack of micronutrients

How Can We Increase Body Voltage?
Once we understand what may be draining voltage, the other half of the question is how to restore it: reducing resistance while supporting the body’s ability to generate and maintain energy.

Chronic Pain and the Sympathetic Twist
Tennant’s material describes the body as shifting available resources to keep the brain and heart working during “fight or flight,” connecting this with the sympathetic nervous system and possible polarity shifts in other circuits. Relaxation and recharging are described as a return to “rest and digest” through the parasympathetic nervous system.
In Healing Is Voltage: The Handbook, Dr. Jerry Tennant calls this the Boyd-Lemke Sympathetic Twist. He credits Irish osteopath Robert Boyd’s description of the “bowling ball syndrome” posture and David Lemke’s electromyography research on flexor contraction and extensor relaxation in sympathetic-on states. Tennant connects that pattern to tilted horizontal lines of the head, shoulders, chest, hips, knees, and ankles.
Within Tennant’s description, the body turns its non-dominant side toward danger, the non-dominant hand protects the face, and the dominant hand prepares to strike. The legs prepare to run, hips flex, and extension muscles are suppressed.
He connects the resulting imbalance with the head and spine, TMJ, ear and sinus concerns, neck and shoulder pain, visual acuity, headaches, hip and shoulder tilt, leg and arm length differences, joint concerns, and cerebrospinal-fluid flow.

Questions About Healing With Voltage
What does Healing With Voltage mean?
Healing With Voltage introduces Dr. Jerry Tennant’s model of body voltage, polarity, meridians, pH, scalar energy, micronutrients, dental health, toxins, emotions, and other factors that may affect energy and repair. The guide explores selected concepts from the model alongside a person’s patterns and questions.
What does Dr. Jerry Tennant mean by body voltage?
Tennant uses body voltage, pH, and millivolts to describe the electrical state of tissues and the body’s capacity to maintain normal function and repair.
What is polarity?
Polarity describes two opposing electrical poles. Tennant proposes that body circuits may have positive or negative polarity and that severely depleted circuits can become harder to recharge.
What are meridians?
Meridians are traditional pathways used in acupuncture. Tennant describes them as electrical circuits connected with organs, muscles, fascia, and body voltage.
How do I check my meridians?
I use muscle testing, a pendulum, and named midline locations to explore meridian polarity. See Muscle Testing and the Meridian Testing Locations reference.
What lowers body voltage?
The five areas discussed here are emotions, root canals and dental infections, scars and tattoos, toxins, and lack of micronutrients. Read What Lowers Body Voltage? for the full guide.
How can I increase body voltage?
The practical focus is reducing resistance while supporting the body’s ability to generate and maintain energy. Read Ways to Increase Voltage for the practical guide.
What is scalar energy?
Scalar energy is a term used in Tennant’s model to describe balanced energy that can help restore polarity and support the body’s ability to hold charge. Read What Is Scalar Energy? for the full guide.
