What are peptides?

Direct answer

Chains of amino acids, shorter than proteins, generally between two and 50 amino acids where proteins have more than 100. That shorter length lets them perform precise cellular functions. The body naturally produces more than 7,000 known peptides, though production slows with age. The first peptide produced in a lab was insulin.
