Chelation Series, Part 2: Why You Should Never Chelate If You Still Have Amalgam Fillings

Updated: 4 hours ago

This article is part of the Chelation Education Series. For an overview and full list of articles, visit the Chelation page.

Let’s cut straight to the problem almost nobody talks about:

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is hiding in half the supplement aisle — and it can pull mercury out of your fillings. So it can then move into your brain and other organs.

Yep.That “antioxidant blend” you grabbed at Costco?Your “liver support” formula? That multivitamin with extra “detox support”?Even some hair/skin/nail supplements?

ALA is stuffed into everything.

And if you still have mercury fillings, taking ALA is the biochemical equivalent of kicking a hornet’s nest.

Plus, ALA only works when it’s taken on a strict, round-the-clock schedule — more on that later in the series.

ALA + Amalgams = Fresh Mercury in Circulation

ALA crosses the blood–brain barrier and binds mercury. That’s great after fillings are gone.

But with amalgams still in your mouth?

ALA acts like a microscopic crowbar. It literally pries mercury out of the fillings and mobilizes it into your bloodstream — where it can redeposit anywhere it wants.

People think they’re “detoxing.”

No.They’re accidentally running a mercury extraction mine in their own mouth.

The Real Danger: Unintentional Chelation

Most people have no idea they’re even taking ALA.

It shows up in:

  • antioxidant complexes

  • liver detox formulas

  • “energy support” supplements

  • metabolic blends

  • anti-aging formulas

  • multivitamins

  • pre-workout powders

  • collagen-enhancing products

You’d be amazed how often ALA is slipped into formulas as a “bonus ingredient.”

If you have amalgams? It’s not a bonus. It’s a liability.

The Supplements That Pretend to Be Safe but Aren’t

Here’s the irony: People avoid “harsh detox,” but take these “gentler” products daily:

  • detox teas

  • liver cleanses

  • antioxidant formulas

  • immune blends

  • weight-loss supplements

  • anti-inflammatory stacks

  • blood sugar control blends

Many of them contain ALA.

And nobody warns you it’s a chelator.

What Is Safe Before Amalgam Removal?

Stabilize — don’t mobilize.

Safe options:

  • Selenium (neutralizes mercury)

  • Magnesium

  • B12

  • Thiamine

  • Taurine

  • Glycine

These support your system without pulling metals.

The Safe Sequence: Before Removal → Removal → Stabilize → Chelation

Your roadmap should always be:

  1. Stop all ALA-containing supplements

  2. Get an OligoScan baseline

  3. Remove amalgams with a biological dentist

  4. Stabilize for several months

  5. Then — and only then — start chelation

Skip the order and you’re not “detoxing.”You’re just redistributing mercury to new real estate.
