Is Alkaline Water Worth the Hype?

The short answer to this question is absolutely NO.

These days, picking the right type of bottled water can feel challenging. Spring, glacier, distilled, electrolyte, mineral, reverse osmosis, tonic, purified, alkaline, the list goes on and on.

Acidity is measured on a pH scale, which ranges from 0 to 14. The lower the pH level, the stronger the fluid’s acidic levels. For example, battery acid has a pH of 0, which means it’s a very strong acid. So water that has a pH level of seven or higher is considered alkaline.

Stomach acid has a pH between 1 and 2, which makes it quite acidic.

The hydrochloric acid in the stomach neutralizes alkaline water before the blood absorbs it, and fiddling with a healthy and fully functioning body’s pH is unnecessary. If the body takes in extra acid or extra alkaline, it disposes of it through the urine. You’re probably better off just drinking lemon water.

Stomach acid does a lot on behalf of your body. It breaks down the foods you eat into easier-to-digest particles. It also acts as the first line of defense against pathogens and microbes that could make you sick.

Keep in mind that battery acid can dissolve materials like metal and bone. Stomach acid, with its pH balance being only one or two spots higher, can also damage very strong materials, like bones and teeth.

We want our stomach to be acidic.  That’s why VIGEO recommends Betaine HCL Pepsin or Enyzmes, rather than Tums or Anti-Acids to help digest our food.

Water in general is already very alkaline compared to stomach pH.  That’s why VIGEO recommends drinking water away from meals to avoid diluting the stomach acid.

The main difference between alkaline and regular H2O? The price. Alkaline water comes with a higher price tag than plain water.

And furthermore, it may have been alkaline at the factory, but now? Alkaline water won't “keep” unless it's stored properly. The antioxidant power in alkaline water can decline in as little as 24 hours without proper storage, and pH levels would fall in about three days. Stored properly, alkaline water can maintain high potency for about a week.
