In a study of 5th graders, a study showed that long term school success could depend on the type of praise the students are given for successfully completing a puzzle.
Students praised for their effort and hard work asked for harder puzzles and learned from their mistakes. Success was tied to effort.
Students praised for being smart asked for easier puzzles and became less likely to take on new challenges. They didn’t want to be seen as dumb.

This short video illustrates how our mindset affects our future choices.
Bottom Line? Praise the people around you for the effort they put into their education, their jobs, their relationships, etc. Praising the process, not the person, makes it more likely they will continue to put effort into their work.
