You Are What You Eat
These documentaries can seem compelling.
They aren’t ALL lies.
What is the real truth?
If you eat a SAD diet (also know as the Standard American Diet), then any change you make away from processed foods will be an improvement! Removing junk foods and adding real stuff like meats, fruits and vegetables is great.
Using diet and lifestyle to conquer chronic illness is also great.
What’s not so great? Twisting the data to make a vegan or vegetarian diet look like it’s perfect and amazing for everyone.
Denise Minger’s funny critique of the bad science is worth a read.
It’s not that people and tribes throughout history didn’t eat plants occasionally. Tender spring greens were probably a welcome sight after a hard winter. Root vegetables in the fall helped fatten everyone up for a lean winter. Eating seasonally and locally is great.
Can you be a healthy vegan? Sure. If you are really careful, and probably have to add a lot of supplements to make up for your diet shortfalls. And the people around you don’t mind your bad gas.
Can you be an unhealthy meat eater? Sure. If you call McDonalds “meat”, and you neglect to get nutrients from organ meats and pasture-raised animals. Just try not to look like the kid in WALL-E.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. Our bodies are adapted to be omnivores, and we don’t have multiple stomachs to digest grass like a cow.
Vegans have to eat A LOT of calories every day to get the nutrients they need to survive.
Nutrients all found in about 1 ounce of liver.
Eat Smarter. Make choices which give you the nutrients to feel amazing, wherever they may come from.
Bottom Line? Improving on the Standard American Diet (SAD) in any form may bolster your health…temporarily. Want to thrive, not just survive? Eat REAL foods…all types.
